Painting your home all by yourself can be really challenging, especially if you don’t have prior experience or a professional helper. There are several important things to keep in mind if you are choosing to do the painting process all by yourself. Most people often tend to ignore these points and end up causing damage to their walls and in turn, spending a lot more to fix it. We have listed a few important tips to keep in mind while painting, so that you don’t end up making the same mistakes –

  1. Determine how much paint you need
You can’t get an estimate of the volume of paint required just by looking at your walls. To get a rough estimate, measure the walls and use one of the paint estimate calculators that are available online. Do not forget about the second coat either. Check whether your walls require two coats and purchase paints accordingly.
  2. Choose the right painting tools
Every painting tool has a different application and works in a different manner. You need to study every tool and understand how it works to determine which tool you need. Every wall might require a different painting tool according to the nature of the walls and paints used. Invest in good quality tools to ensure that the paint reaches every corner of your home walls and for it to last a long time. Choosing the right tools of the highest quality is hence very crucial in the process.
  3. Use painters tape
Protect your switches, doors and windows from any paint stains by using a high quality painters tape. Consider using a putty knife or scraper while removing the tape and avoid using your fingers to prevent any paint drips and to secure sharp lines. Ensure that the paint has completely dried off before removing the tape.
  4. Paint from top to bottom
It is a fundamental rule of painting to always maintain a uniform flow while painting any surface. This ensures that there isn’t a double layer of paint at any place and that the paint is spread out evenly everywhere. Hence a golden rule of home painting is to always paint from top to bottom. By doing this you can prevent any spillage or drip. Paint your ceilings first and work your way downwards.
  5. Pack up/pause properly
If your painting goes on for more than a day then wrap your tools in a cling film and store them safely at low temperature to prevent them from drying. In this way you do not have to clean your brushes every time. Remove the tools only 30 minutes before you resume work on the next day.

Follow these few steps to ensure that you have a smooth and hassle-free painting process. Happy painting!
